1970 April 29/30: San Francisco

upadated July 19 2004

setlist: Grantchester Meadows / Astronomy Domine / Cymbaline / Atom Heart Mother / Embryo / Green Is The Colour / Careful With That Axe, Eugene / Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun / A Saucerful Of Secrets / Interstellar Overdrive

Few recorders exist, 2 recordings are in general circulation so far for this gig: let's skip the matter of the SBD or audience source about the 1st common recorder that is floating around for long, somepeople says it's SBD (and it was actually broadcasted by a local radio as is seems) somepeople says it's just a superb audience recording; if you care you can get your own opininion about it.

An alternate 100% audience recording surfaced, quite complete and excellent in sound, although it has some probs during the second set (fluctuations etc...)

recorder 1: there are infinite versions of this, some missing some portions like this, or also this (claiming to be from Master Clone) some mixing 2 sources etc...; here are the most common releases: "Interstallar Encore"; "Interstellar Fillmore" (also Rev. A.K.); "Other Nights Other Vaults"; the mislabelled and incomplete "Live At Winteralnd"; the untitled "San Francisco 70/4/29 master reels" which corresponds to the "Interstellar Encore" boot ... etc... etc...

recorder 2: not that easy to find, a version from the suppoese master reels is in circulation, from which this 1stGen version comes from.

main points to distinguish the 2 recorders:

recorder 2 has audience chatting before Grantchester Meadows, but then it's cut missing the very beginning of the song.

always on recorder 2 a guy laughs at the beginning of Astronomy Domine.

again on recorder 2 before Cymbaline starts, during the tune-ups the taper's friend asks the taper "are you taping this?"

on recorder 1 the Waters' intro to The Embryo is cut, Waters says just "-Called The Embryo"; on recorder 2 Waters says " right, this is another new song and it's called the Embryo".

KQED 4/30

As much common if not even more is the recording from the KQED TV studios ("An Hour With Pink Floyd"), this is said to have been recorded for the KQED TV station before the evening show at the FW with no audience. Lately people say it was recorded actually the day after as posted on Y by Bog:
"The rumor that this show is from 4/30 and not 4/29 may have been started by me a couple of years ago. ....and I do believe it's true that this was recorded on the morning or afternoon of the 30th. I located the actual contract between the band and the Public Broadcasting System for the rights to this video which was signed by Steve O'Rourke and it dates the recording as having taken place on April 30th."

Several audio versions from the VIDEO are around like this VHS 1st Gen, the most common releases are from LP's like this, recently a version from a

3/4" U-Matic (with KQED label and slate) is around as well; some other tapes are sourced from RADIO broadcast (WNEW?) like this incredibly nice 2ndGen tape, or this other 2ndGen released by LPP as "Bovine Broadcast", or the recently surfaced unknowGen>DAT; the radio source has some extras.

setlist: Atom Heart Mother / Cymbaline / Grantchester Meadows / Green Is The Color / Careful With That Axe, Eugene / Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
