this is a page born to give tips to identify
different recorders of the same show, or a venue from another if they
are particularly similar or have points in common (i.e. the Waters’
announcements ect...) to avoid to misdate them. It will be expanded on other
matters too maybe, hard to be coherent here!
to distinguish between different recorders of the same date is not so complex,
especially if the taper talks on the mic ... but sometimes it may be a real
venture!
the tricks I use to use, and to suggest, are based on my own experience and
absolutely personal! ...
if you’re curious to check by yourself what recorder you have of a particular
venue these are the steps to follow:
0. it’s indispensable you have at least 2
versions of the same show to put side by side (well, it’s obvious!!)
1. it’s indispensable as well that you have
at least a vague idea about how many recorders are known to be in circulation
for that specific date (that’s a good point to start from) … but many
versions supposed from the same recorder often turn out to be different one another, so
do not 100% trust the info you find around.
2. check the different cuts on the
versions you have: different tapers stop the recorders in different points, or
do not record portions of the show that are included in the other recorder etc …
although there’s a huge number of different releases of the same recordings with
different edits … so this is just the first step, you can’t stop here.
3. check the sound quality of your
versions and also try to have an idea about the different distance of the
supposed different tapers from the stage … from this is absolutely not
possible to be sure the recordings are from different tapers, but it’s a good
point to start from as well.
4. main thing to check are the audience
comments around the taper (if you’re lucky is the taper himself to talk on
the mic) or in general ‘noises’ present in the recording (hits on the mic,
guys coughing, clapping, whistling etc…)
from this it’s impossible to fail, indeed you can skip the other steps and
follow directly this one only.
