1972 April 28 : Auditorium Theater, Chicago

updated April 14 2004

Setlist: The Dark Side Of The Moon, One Of These Days, Careful With That Axe Eugene, Echoes, Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun

2 recorders  are in general circulation for this gig, both are complete, although most of the copies of recorder 2 are missing some songs, especially Set The Controls that was supposed to have been not recorded by this taper even, of course now we know it was; still most of the versions around including STC are either entirely from the 1st recorder or from the second recorder having STC filled from the 1st recorder anyway.

here are some of the versions I checked for these recorders:

recorder 1: complete, it is the one used for "The Great Gig" and the STC on "Eclipse-A Piece for Assorted Lunatics (Rev A)" (there are more titles too "Chicago Auditorium 1972" ; "Auditorium Theater Chicago" and this source was used as filler of the second in other titles too like "Dark Side Of Chicago" ...). Few fantapes are also around, like this nice 2ndGen or this 1stGen

recorder 2 is the one used for ""Eclipse-A Piece for Assorted Lunatics"  and the "(Rev A)" ; "Chicago 28.4.72" ... both these 2 versions are incomplete (the HRV release has fillers from the 1st recorder too), the complete recorder 2 is available in "The Fireman's Tapes Volume I" and on the DAT copies circulated in the past supposed from the master like this; An incomplete version including only The Dark Side Of The Moon from Low Generation Reels is recently circulating too.

the 2 recorders are distinguishable just from the difference in sound quality essentially (recorder 1 sounds quite bad), if you've just one source and are curious to know which recorder it comes from a good point of distinction is right the very beginning of the gig during Speak To Me: on recorder 2 a guy clearly yells "...motherfu****" and then a girl shouts "all right" ; on recorder 1 the taper talks at the beginning (volume goes up&down) ... some versions of recorder 2 has the "...motherfu****" edited out (this also on the supposed Master Clones), don't be fooled!.

also, U&T on recorder 1 has a portion of the beginning missing because of the taper 'playing' with the recorder as it seems, it's just missing some notes of the beginning, the lyrics are intact, whereas on recorder 2 there's a real cut missing some lyrics, it was filled with another performance on the Harvested version, it's not the same performance for sure and it's clear even if it's a small piece of lyrics; they filled "U&T and after all we're only ordinary men" ... the original version of recorder 2 is missing just ""U&T and after all" anyway, it has "we're only ordinary men".

when CWTAE starts taper 1 moves the mic a bit, on recorder 2 there's the Waters' intro and a guy yells "get out" soon after that, then another guy replies "all right".

during Echoes on recorder 1 the taper talks a bit in the background during the beginning of the song.

about STC: on recorder 1 the taper talks about at the beginning of the song soon after Waters announces the song, soon before the first bass notes the taper coughs clearly on the mic, then he moves the recorder a bit; on recorder 2 the taper got also some little tune-ups before the song starts and the entire Waters announcement, after Waters announces the song you can hear here a guy says "all right".
