1977 May 01 - Tarrant County Convention Center, Fort Worth, TX, USA : The One

... And not the Only

updated May 2007

the tickets above are not from the taper and are not the original ones once owned by Mr. Tannehill; the pictures of the tickets above

were kindly sent me  by T!, an EU collector who bought them way after the gig from some other guys who attended the show.

This is a small article dedicated to my favourite PF gig / recording ever!
There isn't much point to list all sources that will be discussed in it, but since there’s much confusion around this amazing recording, I felt like writing this piece to make things clear once and for all.

here's THE master of the T recorder +  the 30th Anny edition (REV.A)

here is also a picture of the original tapes of Mr Tannehill

Only one recording seems to exist for this gig: the wonderful recording taped by Mr. Tannehill. Although I was destined to receive periodically down the years accounts (from generally very reliable people) of different recordings of this gig existing, ALL these supposed alternative recordings turned out to be copies of the Tannehill one. Some were such poor copies they sounded as though they were indeed different recordings from Tannerhill’s original, but they were most definitely copies!

So I did the only sensible thing, and that was to ask for details from the taper. What I found out was even sadder than knowing no other recordings existed. It seems that some RoIO collectors in the past (I won't mention any names, even if that would be justifiable) scanned/photocopied Mr. Tannehill's original list and sent it out to people claiming it was their own list, with their own masters listed. Very sad indeed, even not bothering to produce some original cover notes of their own, so as to at least make an attempt at a decent fraudulent copy. Such practices probably contributed to the ‘legend’ of an alternate recording existing, which doesn’t mean no-one else taped the show, of course, but only one is in circulation, and that's Mr. Tannehill's.

Stating this, I must also point out some other details about this recording, since that there are fake master clones around. So once and for all:

1. The taper never gave out any DAT clone of the master NOR any 1st Gen analogue copies or DAT clones of 1stGen's. He sent out copies exclusively made from his 1st Gen backup tapes (so as to not to damage the masters). So the lowest Gen. possible on any analogue cassette tapes or on cass>DAT tapes or on Reel is 2nd Gen. Whichever recording claims to be 1st Gen, Clone of 1st Gen into DAT, Clone of Masters into DAT, 1st Gen. Reels etc., MUST BE FAKE. And the taper also NEVER lent his masters or 1stGen's to anybody either.

2. The ONLY version from the master in circulation is the one released by the taper in person with the following lineage:
Mics: Sony ECM 19B > Recorder: Sony TC-152 > Tape: Sony Chrome CRO-90+2 cassettes the Original Analog Cassette Tapes > Playback Deck: Tascam 130 > Nikko 32 Band EQ > Akai DR16 Digital Hard Disk Recorder > Sony PCM-R500 DAT Recorder > Sony DAT Tape > HHB CDR-800 Compact Disc Recorder > HHB CDR > WAV > SHN

and with the following notes:
I'm the guy who recorded this show. I have the original analog cassette tapes of it.
Over the years I have traded analog tape copies but until now have never done a digital transfer of it. This is the first and only time it has been digitally transferred from the original analog cassette tapes regardless of what anybody else claims.
I removed very little applause. I indexed it so it could be skipped when listening. The right microphone became unplugged at the concert just before “Us And Them”. I used the left channel for both so, technically that song is 2 channel mono.
I have also done the artwork for this version of this show. I really have never liked the practice of giving titles to live shows but I understand one of the reasons people do it is to distinguish between different versions of the same show. I felt like I needed to give this one a title due to the many other inferior versions that exist. Please keep the artwork and text file, unaltered, together with the SHN's

And here’s some additional notes about the gig/recording kindly by the taper:
Pink Floyd 1977-05-01 Tarrant County Convention Center Fort Worth TX Iron Pigs On Fire (T-700)
I don't still have the ticket stubs, I know my ex-wife got one of them, she probably got them both since I can't find the other one. She sat on the right of me. We were seated in the first elevation above the floor on the right side of the stage about 200 feet from the stage. On my left was a blind guy and on the other side of him sat his friend who was explaining to him what was going on. I was concerned that his explaining might be too loud on the tape but it's not too bad.

The taper didn't take any picture and unfortunately lost his original tickets, but if it was hard to find any ticket of this show before, now, here they are! kindly from an EU collector (many thanks to T!) who bought them time ago...

Other than this, what can I say? Just enjoy this astonishing performance, perfectly taped and kindly released by Mr. T. for the pleasure all of us!

UPDATE OF MARCH 2007:

as we deeply wished, and as prove that the saying "Where there's smoke, there's fire" is often true, a genuine alternate recorder seems to have found its way out and is now finally available among the RoIO fans from a nice 1st Generation clone; This recorder is not complete and evidently distinguishable from the common recorder, not only by the inferior quality.
