what's this, a joke? ... funny really
this in not the mysterious Fillmore East April 9 1970, obviously ... and I won't
consider this as mislabeled recording too, cause it seems rather as an attempt
of deception.
When I got this I already used to know it is mislabeled, the Santa Monica
recording was already identified.
but who was to combine the KQED TV studios session with this live in Santa
Monica and *why* is still a mystery ...
the first 3 songs (from San Francisco KQED TV studios) are from a poor source,
sounds hissy about as much as the other tracks from the second recorder of Santa
Monica October 23 ... at a fist superficial listen it would be possible to consider
all the songs coming from a single source actually … but I never heard about a
Grandchester Meadows performed at Fillmore East, nor in Santa Monica October 23
... that was enough to found out the ‘trick’.
... I hope this was not a premeditated joke and that someone just got a tape
with a filler and thought it could be the Fillmore East recording (I don’t
know how he/she could have supposed a thing like that honestly ...)
... I feel like throwing this RoIO away right now, but make me write some
objective notes first:
- first 3 songs - the KQED studios recording 1970-04-29 (supposedly sourced from
video):
apart from the fact that's incomplete, there are absolutely better version of
this recording around ... here the sound is quite hissy and muffled ... to
avoid at all costs.
- track 4 of CD1 + whole CD2 - the Santa Monica Civic Center 1970-10-23
recording:
hissy sound here too, but complete at least ... not the complete performance, of
course, but the complete recording (source2) ... as we all know it at present.
it's the same as the LP Cymbalyne PF 2804-2, indeed the second source of Santa
Monica 23.10.70.
My LP rip sounds much better than this, in spite of the vinyl noise the sound is
absolutely brighter ... I do ignore if here was used an LP or a tape as source.
