After my experiences on the first two nights, it was time to visit the scalpers
outside of MSG. I wasn’t about to
risk another seat with an obstructed view, so Jody and I bought tickets for the
third row, directly in front of Roger
Waters. Unfortunately, this is the night that my new Panasonic recorder proved
that it wasn’t up to the task. I
used the “automatic level control” feature that worked so well on my Sanyo, but
ended up with distortion anyway.
There are many listenable passages, but I find it very hard to be objective
about this tape. I only think about what
could have been. The performance itself was amazing of course, with the most
memorable moment being the
explosion after Dogs. I think we actually felt the concussion from that blast.
Roger's reaction was priceless. I’m
sure you’re familiar with it.

We also bought tickets from the scalpers for the final performance. This time,
we sat in the second row in front
of David Gilmour. I taped the show, but I have no idea what happened to it. I
don’t remember lending it to anyone,
but that’s the most likely solution.
After the show, Jody, Ellen, and I staked out a hotel that was rumored to be in
use by the band. I remember it was
near the U.N. building. We waited in the lobby, and before long, Gilmour and
Wright entered and headed towards
the elevator. We intercepted them and struck up a brief conversation. I recall
mentioning the fireworks. We were
probably hoping they were going to invite us upstairs to hang out, but they
never stopped walking and disappeared
into the waiting elevator.
As for the Panasonic, I attempted one more concert later that week. I manually
controlled the levels, but the
results were still distorted and the Panasonic was removed from service.

The superb artwork created by ethiessen1 contains an image of a WNEW mail order
form. These forms were given
out at an event in Central Park that included an appearance by the Pink Floyd
pig. I remember that it was a bit of
a fiasco. I think the intention was for the pig to drop the forms, but something
went wrong. The vouchers were
eventually handed out by hapless volunteers who were immediately surrounded by
throngs of ticket-hungry fans. I
remember the guy being chased by my group threw the forms up in the air and ran
for his life. I came away with a
few vouchers that I believe I used to buy my tickets for July 1 and 2. I
photographed the Central Park event, but
lost the prints over the years. I discovered the negatives a few months ago and
was unable to have them printed
locally. I mailed them to fellow Dimer utmancooper, and he used his expertise to
produce the images. The photo of
the pig on this July 3 cover is mine. I’ll post some more below.
