1977 Februuary (20)/22/23/24/25: Tutti al Pavillon di Parigi updated June 2007
This page is meant to be as recorders/reference about 1 date in Paris only so far, since only 1 date has more than 1 recorder at now. Since there are different versions circulating for each date and, above all, since it happened very often that the dates where confused one another (bringing as a result the circulation of many mislabelled tapes) this page can be worth it to put things clear about that too. I must admit I made this page also to report the peculiar presence of Italian people during some of these gigs ... Given that there was no date in Italy for the Animals tour this is at least a way to say "we were there too" ... I'll add the "italian comments" little by little when I exactly catch them....
setlist: Sheep /Pigs On The Wing Part 1 / Dogs / Pigs On The Wing Part 2 / Pigs (Three Different Ones) / Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V) / Welcome To The Machine / Have A Cigar / Wish You Were Here / Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX) / Money
[1 recorder is in general circulation, various known different sources/copies] This recording circulated with a lotta titles: the most famous version was maybe the "Dragged Down By The Stone" RoIO or also the HL's release "First Night In Paris" ... till the version directly from the master reels surfaced, it is now available for all the fanatics thanks to the FRP's "Pavillion De Pigs" release. The recording was often mislabeled on tape as Antwerpen February 20; see for example the "Animals Over Europe" RoIO, or this amazing sounding 3rdGen; or this 2ndGen or this as much great sounding LowGen, all copies of the masters having little edits, some tapecopies even have songs cut. It isn't rare to find this recording mislabeled as Paris February 25 either, the longest version supposed from the master reels has been, as well as also the recent version included in the "Reeling In Pink Floyd" series.
to recognize this gig here are the PF greetings available on the recording:
- at the end of the 1st set Waters says: "We’re gonna take a
break ... we’ll be back in twenty minutessss" - at the end of Money Waters says: "Thank you... goodnight", then Gilmour says something too, that sounds as a "goodnight" as well. mind that Waters does not reveal any number during this show. There's a bass tune instead of a number on the 3rd verse of Pigs (exactly a scale of 5 notes).
NB: the copies of the genuine Antwerpen recording in circulation have for some reasons Money from Paris 77.2.22 ... see below
compendium
because of the confusion of this recording with the Antwerpen February 20 one I think it's worth to put a little note about that Antwerpen date too. again: the great part of the old tapes labeled Antwerpen 77.2.20 are actually Paris 77.2.22 (same recorder as the one in circulation).
First of all, the genuine recording of Antwerpen has a number: Waters on the 3rd verse of Pigs says an articulate 13. Also the genuine Antwerpen recording has these points of distinction, that are almost certainly in the actual master: - Sheep starts from the very beginning without soundscape (right before Waters starts singing). Also Waters forgets to sing "Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland" on Sheep (or it's just the mic that won't work, or he just sings is far from the mic.) - Dogs has an inside cut right before the last verse starts (is is clearly audible how the taper either switched the tape side or had probs with the recorder). - SOYCD 1-5 is missing the very beginning. - In both the genuine copies I checked, the recording also presents a sorta light buzzing noise in the back at times (not during all the songs).
the most common version of the Antwerpen recording is the fan-release "Duks On The Wall" and, for some time now, also the first CDR version from low gen I got was spread widely (thanks to M.A. for that low gen btw!! ... that was one of the very first CDs I got via trade, and I can't forget it!) PF greetings available on the recording: at the end of Pigs Waters says: "...[something I didn't catch]... in 20 minutes" at the end of SOYCD 6-9 Waters says "Thank You"; ... then you can hear both Waters and Gilmour saying "goodnight" far from the mic's, in the back. at the end of Money Waters says "thank you again" ... then Gilmour "goodnigh, thank you"
now, done that someone could think: "ok, almost all the Antwerpen tapes were mislabeled in the past, but who tells you for sure those are not the real Antwerpen recordings and the one supposed to be Antwerpen now isn't really Paris?" That's a question I asked myself too, and the only way to have a 100% sure answer was to ask some Belgian people... and I did... Consulted about this matter, Lothy, a nice Belgian boy, gave me the definitive answer: I can say now "yes! this Antwerpen recording with the number 13 is the REAL Antwerpen recording"
<Lothy> yep; i confirm; 100% flemish "zitteeeeeeen!!!!" (sit
down) at the beginning of potw and belgian french next to/beside the taper
IMPORTANT NOTE: mind that (to make this matter even more complex!) the Money track on the genuine Antwerpen CDs is FAKE and is really always from Paris 77.2.22 (same recorder as the one in circulation).
77-2-23: setlist: Sheep /Pigs On The Wing Part 1 / Dogs / Pigs On The Wing Part 2 / Pigs (Three Different Ones) / Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V) / Welcome To The Machine / Have A Cigar / Wish You Were Here / Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX) / Money
[1 recorder is in general circulation, 3 different sources] this is commonly available in an edited CD version, also re-released by MoLM. Some tapesources reveal this recording to be longer, with a long soundscape before Sheep and other little intermissions, like on this truly nice unknown (low?) gen. Another source was recently discovered (see this 2nd gen) and it was originally totally mislabeled.; the tape was first labeled as Paris 2-22, then is was believed to be Paris 2-25 ... not without any reason: indeed it's really 2-23 (till the first part of Shine On You Crazy Diamond VI-IX) + attached 2-25 (2nd part of Shine On You Crazy Diamond VI-IX + Money) to recognize this gig here are the PF greetings available on the recordings: - at the end of SOYCD 6-9 Waters says: "Thank you" (then the recording cuts) - Money fades out before the end on all the "genuine" versions. Waters says 14 on Pigs (3 Different Ones) 3rd verse
I just recently noticed, thanks to the suggestion of an Italian
friend, the presence of Italian audience on this recording, like I also noticed
it on the 77.2.24 recordings some time ago.
77-2-24: setlist: Sheep /Pigs On The Wing Part 1 / Dogs / Pigs On The Wing Part 2 / Pigs (Three Different Ones) / Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V) / Welcome To The Machine / Have A Cigar / Wish You Were Here / Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX) / (Money?)
[3 known recorders, 2 of which in general circulation] I have only 2 recorders for this gig at now, but a 3rd one is supposed to exist even if it might be just believed to exist (??;) Mind that none of the recorders seems to be 100% complete, complete CD versions for this date are fake, like this one that has, for example, a filler from 77-02-22. here are the descriprions of the 2 recorders. recorder 1: the most common one, available on the fan-release entitled just as "Pavillon De Paris", there are also several fantapes in circulation, like this 1st gen, or this other 1stGen Missing parts on this recorder are:
- the first part of Sheep, it
starts near to the middle of the song. recorder 2: less common than the first one, there's a 1st gen in circulation. Missing parts/points of distinction on this recorder are:
- Sheep is missing the first part
(as on recorder 1)
- consequently SOYCD 6-9 and the encore
are missing no greetings are available on the recordings Waters says 15 on Pigs (Three Different Ones) - 2nd verse
On the second recorder of this gig you can hear italians chatting in the back, especially at the beginning of SOYCD 1-5 ... guys talk about the song, a guy with a northern-italian accent says at a certain point "... è il pezzo più bello .... pensa che noi lo facciamo identico..." ["...it's the most beautiful piece, we perform it identical ..."] then his friend sings "pa-pa-pa-pa..." and the same man as before says "...anche la parte cantata" ["...also the singing parts"] ... then he goes on talking but I catched just something about "dita" ["fingers"] and he sings too "ta-ta-ta-ta" ....
77-2-25 setlist: Sheep /Pigs On The Wing Part 1 / Dogs / Pigs On The Wing Part 2 / Pigs (Three Different Ones) / Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V) / Welcome To The Machine / Have A Cigar / Wish You Were Here / Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX) / Money
[1 recorder is in general circulation, at least 3 known different sources] only one recorder is circulating although it has been spread in all the possible sauces. The most common version is indeed totally missing the 1st set and the encore, different titles circulated of this edited version like "Shine On" (BC 25 Black Cat Records); "Shine On Improved" (remastered version of the previous release); "Live Volume 2" (JOK-013-B Joker Productions); "Paris 1977" (091-014 The Screaming Abdabs) ... all have the same contents and are prolly clones one another. Then there are complete versions like the rather famous OCO's "Filling In Time" RoIO, and the several fantapes that can differ a lot both in contents and sound quality, some low generation tapes give evidence that this recording is originally very good sounding, examples are this edited low gen or the 2 songs available as filler on the once mislabeled 77-2-23 2nd gen, the incomplete 2ndGen or this complete 3rdGen or this recently surfaced 1stGen by the master reel (this also has been released as "Animals aux Abattoirs" - HRV CDR 038) Mind that there are several mislabeled complete tapes for this date too, some of the tapes labeled 2.25 are actually 2.22
to recognize this gig here are the PF greetings available on the recordings:
- at the end of Money Waters says: "Thank you again... Goodnight,
thank you" ...then Gilmour says "Goodnight, thank you"
always thanks to the suggestion of an Italian friend I was able to
catch at least 1 Italian comment on the recording so far, in the middle of SOYCD 6-9 a
lady chats in the back and says something like "... è caldo ..." ["...it's hot ..."]
